With the myriad of environmental challenges faced by people and countries around the world, it has become critical for local and national governments to adopt policies that incorporate concerns regarding environmental sustainability, and to collaborate with other governments to address the various threats to the environment.

International environmental governance is especially important as the world's natural resources continue to be depleted, which threatens economies of all scales. With nearly half of the world's working population depending on fisheries, forests and agriculture for their livelihoods, policies on how to maintain these economies in a sustainable manner are essential.
