Tuesday, Sept. 18, we gather once again at the good ‘ol Edgewater. SAL AL-ASHKAR is the Program Host, and he will introduce Dora Zuniga, Executive Director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Dane County, who will tell us about their program, which supplies older role models to assist young people. The Board of Directors will also meet in the evening on 9/18.
At our last meeting, Pres. DON opened the meeting and LINDA BERGREN once again led the song, eschewing the piano’s guidance for our usual averaging efforts on the pitch. LINDA then swapped hats for the first time, and gave the invocation. The TT instituted some cockamamie form of drawing, under which a few lucky attenders avoided a fine and most got tagged for something. Imaginative, but still would be taxation without representation, except that we misguidedly elected this guy.
PHIL STOWITTS says Bucky Books have arrived. We sell them for $35 each, on which our Club makes $12 per book. He says there are 41 golf courses in there, which makes the editor wonder if nobody is working a full week in Wisconsin any more. For those who golf, or eat out, or both, though, you can save a considerable sum of money and benefit the Club at the same time.
MELISSA NOVINSKI said she and SCOTT GROVER had raised $235 in pledges, even before they started the Combat Blindness Foundation Walk. That means about a dozen people somewhere in the world will have their sight restored.
LINDA BERGREN put on her mythical fund-raiser-chairperson hat, and announced the start of our annual Holiday Goodies sale, featuring our world-famous Benson’s fruit cake, assorted nuts and candies, and the ever-popular malted milk balls. She’ll have a list ready next week with prices (up a bit this year) and varieties. Product must be ordered in case lots, which means that usually the most popular items will be on the list. If you want one of the other products it can be ordered, but you’ll have to deal with a whole case of whatever. There have been some past fiascos in ordering, so please read the order list carefully as to quantity.
JIM KEMMETER says September is our month to be transporters for the Eye Bank, so if you are on the list be prepared for phone calls. If you’d like to take part in this vitally important service activity, see JIM. The trips aren’t all that far, but they can come at any time of day or night. Follow the transports using our online chart.
JODI BURMESTER introduced the speaker, who turned out to be JODI BURMESTER. She showed us, with the help of projection wizard SCOTT GROVER, an inspirational video by photographer Dewitt Jones. Using beautiful nature photography to illustrate his points, he talked about change, and how you can find and try new things and new ways. He said you have to believe in it before you can see it, and have to appreciate the abundance that most of us have. By celebrating what’s right, we find the energy to fix what’s wrong. It was an excellent presentation, and can’t adequately be summarized in print. As the saying goes, “you had to be there.” Those that were didn’t seem to notice that it ran overtime.
